GCSEs are stressful for both students and the parents. They assess knowledge across a wide range of topics and are the first assessments that students do that will impact on jobs and careers in the future. The modular system also adds pressure as the examinations are held throughout the 2 years.
This means that a large number of students do not fulfil their expected grade or desired grade when they first take their GCSE’s. GCSE resits can be done either alongside first-time A-level courses or before starting A-levels. It may be necessary to re-take one or more GCSE subjects simply to satisfy university matriculation requirements.
For most universities, a minimum of five GCSE passes at grade 'C' or above is a mandatory requirement and students should have attained at least this standard before beginning A-levels. For those who need to spend a further period of time re-taking GCSE subjects, a decision needs to be made as to how quickly to re-take, which will depend on knowledge and aptitude in the subject, the amount of preparation work required, other work priorities and the availability of winter exam sittings. GCSE coursework is also a factor, as this may be carried forward or re-submitted, but is not transferable to a different examining board.
We are happy to offer advice about re-take strategies, either by telephone, e-mail or personally. In most cases one or two subjects may be taken early, in November, with the remainder taken over a full academic year. Where only one or two subjects need to be re-taken, to satisfy university requirements, it is normally possible to begin a couple of A-levels and to re-take the GCSE subjects alongside these.
In order to target on the areas that your child needs the most support in, we assess the topics as a whole then work through the understand, memorising and retention of the knowledge required. Students learn using a variety of methods, from anagrams and mind maps to learning by rote and creating revision cards. No technique is wrong, but we do approach each one with the sole aim of making it more productive for the student.
Each child is different and the tuition provided will incorporate this to ensure it is always appropriate for your child. If they need strict rules, an understanding manner, the practical approach using day-to-day examples or a friendly face to encourage their hidden talent, you can be sure that it is their for them every time they have a session.
We do not just keep them going through a book a page at a time, every session is structured for the child and varied so that it is stimulating for them. We will also feed back to you regularly so that you are always aware of how your child is progressing.
